Crokinole & Lamp

A great amount of people are forced to leave their homeland because of social, political and economical reasons. A way to help immigrants integrate into society is to improve exchange with locals. Therefore, I designed a “Crokinole” board game, a matching lamp and stools with the help of “Café Schukert”: A language café in Dals Långed where refugees can meet inhabitants of the village around a cup of coffee. Crokinole is a skill game with elements of curling reduced to table-top size. The hanging lamp located over the board game not only provides light but also creates a warm and pleasant atmosphere. When not playing the game the backside of the board can be used as a blackboard.
The project came into being during my semester abroad at HDK Steneby in Sweden. I joined the BA 2nd year in Wood Oriented Furniture Design with this year’s topic “Gathering around the table”. We investigated material, form and function and designed objects that embody various kinds of gatherings; gatherings of materials and gatherings of people – all about stimulating interaction through design. Using modern techniques such as CNC and laser cutting to work with the Desktop linoleum (sponsored by Forbo), I brought back to life an intuitive game, that doesn’t need any rules or common language for people from different countries to play together.
Special thanks to Leevi Laurila (CNC) and Ying-Yu Wei (bowl turning).
